DESCRIPTION:
The idea for this font came out of thinking about communication and how
it is affected by fears about security in this digital, modern civilian
world. Words and type are used to communicate messages to an audience or
readership, but when fear of the ‘other’ mounts, it is necessary
to communicate secretly, to limit the audience, the readership, to shut
out or get around the ‘other’. The ‘other’ stands
for the real or supposed cause of fear. The medium therefore is changed
into codes. Scrambled or altered messages, encryption and secret languages
become the mode of graphic communication in times of security alerts and
silent wars. The font has been created by recording the audible (analogue)
alphabet from Morse code signals, and saving them as .RAW sound files. These
files were then imported directly into Photoshop. This translated the information
from the audio files into images by the computer. As a result, this has
changed the once analogue Morse code into a visual, scrambled digital format,
and made an encrypted code. |
